Dog Training – Simple Commands to Instill Obedience

Submitted by on May 31, 2010 No Comment

Basically a few typical commands such as ‘sit’, ‘fetch’, ‘stay’, etc are enough to train puppies and instill proper behavioral characteristics in them. Many owners of dogs are ignorant of the fact that the misconduct of dogs is the result of overlooking to shape up their character when they are pups.

More or less, all pups can be suitably trained when they are seven to eight weeks old and the training will enable them to respond properly in various conditions that they face. We will look into a few customary commands and the correct approach to apply them. Keep some choice treat for the dog with you to make the training program a success.

1. Sit – To put this command into action, it is desirable to hold a food item in your left hand over the pup’s head and say the command ‘sit’ forcefully. The natural response of the pup would be to sit on its bottom on the ground and lift its head up simultaneously. If the pup’s bottom is not on the ground, use your right hand to set the dog’s rear firmly on the floor. When you are satisfied that the pup understood the command, reward it with its favorite treat.

2. Stay – Before issuing this command, ensure that the pup is sitting on its back and then say the command ‘Stay’ firmly simultaneously regressing a little distance away. If the pup continues in that position, again reward it with treat. It is imperative that the pup is aware that the treat is a reward for staying put.

3. Heel – Hold the treat in your left hand and display the treat close to the level of its forehead. Now say the obedience command ‘heel’ and take a few steps. As you move ahead, permit the pup to have some of the given foodstuff.

Begin the process with a couple of steps and increase your pace whenever you give the ‘heel’ command. Commend the pup when he does it faultlessly. Once the pup begins to realize what is to be done by him, you can lift the foodstuff a little higher. If the pup leaps to nibble the treat, do not reward him. Reward should be offered only if he follows your command.

4. Stand – The dog can only be trained in this obedience command when it is in the sitting position. Make sure that the pup realizes the importance of both commands. Use the foodstuff vertically above its head and issue the command ‘stand’ until the pup stands erect. Give him the treat when he obeys your command. When its action becomes instinctive, extend the standing time before giving it the treat.

5. Down – Exhibit the treat deliberately to teach the pup this obedience command. Now issue the command ‘Down’ bringing down the treat leisurely to the floor level simultaneously. You need to press him down to the ground if required. Give him treats if he obeys your command to lie down. Continue the training till he learns your command and his actions are automatic.

6. Come – The ideal method to coach this obedience command your pup is to call his name followed by the command ‘come’ at different occasions during the day. Reward it with praise and treats when he obeys the command.

Your achievement in teaching your puppy these command depends on your promptness in praising, giving him treats and being affable to the pup.
