Train Your Dog the Right Way

Submitted by on November 17, 2009 No Comment

Some of us are just too eager to teach our pooches to play dead or roll over without thinking whether we are doing the right thing or not. As with other tasks, there are correct ways of training a dog, and there are training methods that are just plain counter-productive, if not plain stressful to both man and his best friend. This is the reason why experts come up with dog training advices in order for us to better understand what it takes to train a dog properly. Some of the tips are included here.

Train Your Dog

First, realize that having a dog around brings about a set of responsibilities. We are talking of giving him proper shelter, feeding him, having him checked by the vet once in a while, grooming him, cleaning up his mess, and so on. And to think we are nowhere near discussing his training! Remember that having a dog almost has the same set of responsibilities as having a child of your own. So if you don’t have a dog yet but are considering to get one, make sure you have considered whether you can take care of his needs or not.

Once you have your dog ready for training, you might think of heading straight to the park to train him. This is actually the worst thing you can do, especially when your dog is just beginning training. Your pooch needs to get used to hearing your voice, and you can’t do that with all the noise in the park. Start training at home where there is peace and quiet so that the dog can learn to focus on our voice. After all, you can’t train a dog who can’t hear you.

Try to be patient. Dogs tend to differ when it comes to learning pace, and curiously some tricks are easier to learn than others as well. If the dog makes a mistake, do not hit the dog or punish him by inflicting pain. This would only encourage aggressive behaviors on his part. Instead, reward him every time he does something right. Dogs, like humans, have emotions as well. They like to be praised, acknowledged and rewarded.

If you had a bad day, it might be best just to spend time with him instead of training him. Make sure he had mastered one trick before proceeding to the next in order to avoid confusion. Lastly, love your dog. It is important that your dogs know that training sessions are opportunities for you and him to bond. Show him some love because he certainly will. Seeing your dog always happy to see you when you come home at the end of the day is just priceless.
